Silent Book Club Matthews May Meeting

  • Historic Reid House 134 West John Street Matthews, NC, 28105 United States (map)

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT

This month, we're excited to meet at the Historic Reid House! With plenty of seating inside and out, there's a cozy spot for everyone. We recommend bringing a cushion or small blanket if you'd like a little extra comfort. Prefer fresh air? Feel free to bring a chair and settle in on the patio or lawn for a peaceful evening under the trees.

We're thrilled to welcome award-winning author Malika J. Stevely to SBC Matthews this month!

Malika J. Stevely is an award-winning author of historical fiction, essays, and African American and women's literature. A graduate of California State University-Fullerton, Stevely earned degrees in English and Comparative Literature and Communications. As a former newspaper reporter, she has published an array of articles and conducted interviews with civil rights and literary icons.

Malika resides in North Carolina with her husband and children, with whom she enjoys singing show tunes at the top of her lungs. Song of Redemption is her debut novel.

Inspired by true events, Song of Redemption is filled with the rich culture of multi-parishes west of the Mississippi River. Malika J. Stevely artfully pries open a window to aspects of pre-Civil War life for communities of color that are rarely discussed in detail. This unique blend of suspense, romance, and family saga invites readers into an unforgettable journey of the past that will leave audiences riveted while touching the hearts of untold generations.

How Silent Book Club Works

Silent Book Club is called that because it is an opportunity to enjoy quietly reading a book in a location different from your home, where no discussion is required. Some of the locations we visit might have background noise and conversations, but you do not have to participate in any conversations during your time with us.

Silent Book Club is BYOBook so you can show up with any book (physical or digital). There are no assigned readings or discussions, just uninterrupted time to immerse ourselves in the pages of our favorite books.

Event Schedule

  • 6:00-6:30 PM: Arrival, meet the author, find a comfy place to read

  • 6:30-7:30 PM: Quiet reading hour

  • 7:30-8:00 PM: Continue reading, talk with others, author Q&A

Feel free to come and go as you please, staying for as little or as long as you like.
